Who is RefugeeHomeNL?

RefugeeHomeNL is a collaboration of a number of aid organizations to organize safe shelter for Ukrainian refugees in Dutch host households. Due to the overwhelming offer from society to take in refugees from Ukraine, the Ministry of Justice and Security has asked the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and VluchtelingenWerk Nederland and Takecarebnb to join forces. We do this under the name RefugeeHomeNL.

What does RefugeeHomeNL do?

The RefugeeHomeNL consortium coordinates and facilitates safe private reception for displaced persons from Ukraine. We do this by recruiting, informing, screening and supervising host households on the one hand, and by informing, recruiting and conducting intakes of Ukrainian people seeking help on the other. We then match the offer of the host families with the demand of the guests. RefugeeHomeNL guides the entire process from registration and intake to matching and departure.

Why private care through RefugeeHomeNL?

– Screening guest households
– Help with refugee intakes
– Matching based on wishes, expectations and possibilities
– Non-binding acquaintance and decision to live together at click
– Support for host family and guest during cohabitation
– Delimited period of I243 months living together
– Guiding around departure, possible extension and relocation

Together with RefugeeHomeNL

RefugeeHomeNL is now active in most Dutch municipalities. Potential host families from all Dutch municipalities can register to participate. After a successful introduction, Ukrainian guests can be accommodated with host families in all municipalities. Private reception by RefugeeHomeNL will exist alongside municipal reception and informal private reception. In principle, it therefore does not replace the other forms of reception.

RefugeeHomeNL and your municipality

RefugeeHomeNL stands for good and safe private reception. Hopefully in your community too. We would like to hear from you how we can be of service to you. For example, is there a closure or relocation of a municipal shelter? Is the municipal reception in danger of being overstretched? Do you receive signals about abuses at private reception in your municipality? Would you like to inform Ukrainian refugees in your municipality about our initiative? We would be happy to work with you. It is also good to know that we do not take over the existing forms of private reception in your municipality, nor do we offer support to host families that have not been screened by us. We also cannot check who lives at which address in your municipality.

Frequently asked questions and answers

  • The method of RefugeeHomeNL is now being used throughout the Netherlands. To a large extent this is a digital process. In addition, we have physical points in various large cities. Ukrainian displaced persons can also register here.

  • At RefugeeHomeNL we attach great importance to safety. That is why we conduct an extensive screening interview with all registered host families. Possibilities and impossibilities, expectations and obstacles are carefully discussed with the host family. If they are found suitable for participation, they are requested to apply for a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG). Only after receipt of the VOG is their registration final and can proceed to the matching process.

  • No, in principle we do not intervene with existing forms of private reception. We go through careful processes to guarantee the quality of our services and the safety of the guest and host family. Of course, Ukrainian guests and Dutch guest households who already have experience with other forms of private care may (also) register via RefugeeHomeNL.

  • No, we only check whether the person concerned falls under the Temporary Protection Directive.

  • Yes, the private reception via RefugeeHomeNL reduces the pressure on the Municipal Reception and can promote the flow. However, that is not an end in itself of our method. Private care via RefugeeHomeNL exists in addition to 'informal' private care and municipal care.
